Configuring Linux Host Name


After you configure your Ethernet or your wireless NIC, you're now ready to configure the host name and DNS settings for your Red Hat Linux computer.   This information is what your computer will be known as to the rest of your LAN.


Follow the steps below and as follows:


  • click the Host tab in the Network Configuration window
  • click the Add button
  • Enter your computer's IP address in the address box
  • type the combined host name and domain name of your computer in the Hostname: text box.   ex.: veracruz.paunchy.net 
  • enter the simple name of your computer in the Alias: text box   
    • If, for instance, you entered veracruz.paunchy.net in the Hostname: box, then your Alias is veracruz 
  • click Ok to return to the Network Configuration window
